In some cases, your battery may be dead because the alternator is dead. If you have a relatively new battery in your automobile, it shouldn’t die. If it does and is unable to hold a charge after a jumpstart, the problem is likely not with your battery but rather with your alternator. Scotty’s Automotive explains that the alternator charges the battery and powers accessories and components. This is why your battery is directly affected by a bad alternator.
Accessory Trouble
Another sign that you have a problem with the alternator is accessory trouble. For example, assume for a moment that your radio turns off and will not turn back on. Assume for another moment that your power windows are not opening and closing and you cannot adjust your power seats. These are just some examples of accessory problems associated with a bad alternator.
Burning Smells
You may also notice burning smells coming from the engine. If it smells like burning wires are burning rubber, it could be the alternator or the alternator belt, respectively. Any burning odors should give you pause. It’s never a good idea to drive your automobile if you smell something burning.
Dashboard Warning
You may also receive a dashboard warning light if the alternator is going bad. The light may be the ALT or GEN light, or you may end up with an illuminated battery-shaped light. This is definitely an indication that you have a problem in the electrical system and, if coupled with the other signs listed in this blog post, it’s likely the alternator.
Dim Lights
One sure sign that your alternator is not sending enough power to components is dim headlights. In rare cases, the alternator may be overpowering the headlights and they will be too bright. When the headlights are dim, most likely all of your vehicle’s lights are dim, including the interior lights.
Frequent Stalls
Frequent stalling can point to a spark plug problem and it can point to an alternator problem. It can also point to a fuel problem, but that’s another blog post. In the case of the alternator, if it is not powering the spark plugs, they will misfire and your vehicle will stall frequently.
Growling/Whining
Finally, growling or whining sounds coming from the engine can also point to the alternator. This is especially true if the internal mechanisms of the alternator have worn down or the alternator belt is loose.
Scotty’s Automotive in Montague, NJ, can take the guesswork out of the above problems. We will test your alternator to make sure it is working okay. If not, we will replace it.
