Why Is There Oil All Over My Shock Absorbers?

If your shock absorbers are covered in oil, they are bad. Scotty’s Automotive advises that the shock absorbers start to leak once they get too old. This is just one sign that the shocks need to be replaced. We are going to list other signs of suspension problems below, including indications that your struts need to be replaced, as well.

Constant Side-Pulling

If your vehicle pulls to the side constantly while you are driving straight, your wheels are not aligned properly. We can realign your wheels to ensure your wheels head straight unless you turn the steering will. This is how the suspension is designed. The wheels are designed to go straight unless they are turned in a different direction.

Feeling All the Bumps

Another sign that your shocks have gone bad is feeling every single bump in the road that you drive over. This is also an indication that the struts need to be replaced. Generally, you have shocks on the back wheels and struts on the front wheels. If your ride is bumpy and uncomfortable, the shocks and struts are too old.

Low-Sitting Corner

Your car, truck, or C/SUV should sit evenly on all four wheels. One corner of the automobile should not sit lower than any of the other corners. If you notice that your vehicle has this problem, you’ve broken the suspension spring on that wheel. Another sign that the suspension spring is broken is loud clunking noises when you go over bumps in the road.

Momentum Motion

Your vehicle’s suspension is designed to hold the body of the automobile still despite the automobile’s momentum. In other words, if it weren’t for the shocks and struts, your car would lurch forward when you stop, lean backward when you accelerate, and tilt to the side when you turn around the corner. Old shocks and struts will make the vehicle’s body do this.

Steering Difficulties

Finally, if it has become difficult to steer your automobile, you’ve got a problem somewhere with the steering system. It’s possible that the power steering fluid is too low or that the power steering pump has died. You may also have worn steering mechanisms that need to be replaced. The steering system is part of your vehicle’s suspension.
